Has been caught. This story WFTV.com – News – Record Hammerhead Shark Was Pregnant immediately reminded me of my (true) hammerhead story.
Brigid and I were on a north coast of Grand Cayman (shortly before we left the island, in 1981) diving in 95 feet of water with Bob Osterwyk, Paul Sleep, and a lady friend of Bob’s whose name escapes me. And this eight or nine foot hammerhead swims by, about 50 feet away. You could see the gills working, and the eye on the end of the head.
An incredible sight.
I wasn’t worried at all, UNTIL I turned around and looked at the dive leader, Paul Sleep. Paul had done over 2,000 dives around the world, was a first class BSAC diver (one of only a few hundred in the world) and was clinging to the coral trying to look the size of a gnat. I figured "If Paul’s nervous, I should be too."
Anyway the hammerhead kept going east along the drop off, and we kept going west.
Our heads were spinning for days.
