The game plan is discharge either tomorrow (Saturday) or for sure on Sunday.
The decision will be made tomorrow and I think it will probably depend on my platelet and red blood cell count. They may decide to keep me until Sunday, give me a platelet transfusion and then release me. One of the nurses said this approach is fairly common – the idea is to send you home with a “full tank”.
My white blood cell count was 2.8 this morning, up from 0.6, so as expected it is rising rapidly (normal is 4-11).
Brigid and I spoke again to a nutritionist here, who went over diet and food preparation for “neutropenic” people (those with a compromised immune system). We will have to keep with the changes for about two months. They are things like, avoid deli foods, peel all fruit, even after washing it, don’t use your pepper shaker at home (didn’t know that pepper is full of bacteria), stuff like that.
I have started eating more. Mouth sores are almost completely gone. The nutritionist said that because I’ve eaten so little in the past ten days, it would take my body awhile to adjust to anything but small meals.
So almost at the end of a long haul that started in September. I confess to some feeling of relief.
