Rugby: Fairfield women win semi-final & into Conference Championship!

Yay! Now 7-0-1 with their toughed out 21-19 win over Stony Brook. And Stony Brook had some big forwards. How big? Very big!

Fairfield led 21-7 and then hung on. In fact the game might have been saved with five minutes left when the 90 lb freshman wing Caroline pulled off a tackle on Stony Brook’s 230 lb second row, who’d already scored two tries (No exaggeration, but alas no picture. The Stony Brook lady & Caroline shown below.)! Tries were scored by #9 Julie Moser, #11 Morgan Callahan, and #12 Julia D’Innocenzo while #10 Kate Welzel kicked three conversions. None of the conversions were easy; all midway between the posts and sideline. Kate has a beautiful, easy kicking style. Julia D’Innocenzo made numerous breaks over the gainline on the muddy field.

Championship game this coming weekend at Vassar on Sunday.

The ball carrier here – Nelly – was my summer office intern – She’s great!

This was the conversion kick that put Fairfield up 21-7 and proved to be the difference.

The Stony Brook 2nd row, who scored twice on long runs

And Caroline who crucially tackled her late in the game – tough!

Last tackle of the game – and it’s over
