The strange name comes from a 1922 movie featuring Rudolph Valentino, Blood and Sand.

Below the two minute vid is a link to another video – Anders talking in some length about how the cocktail is not popular with bartenders and also his variation to pep it up a bit.

The Farandaville effort, with picture.
3/4 oz. blended scotch – by an odd coincidence we also used Money Shoulder
3/4 oz. Heering Cherry Liqueur
3/4 oz Dolin red vermouth
3/4 oz. fresh squeezed orange juice
Shaken with ice; we garnished with the orange slice. Results: Brigid “Ok”, Tom “Meh”. Here’s our picture – note the color is very close to rust. Some people love it so give it a try. It is recommended to avoid scotch with a strong peat flavor despite what Steve the Bartender ends the video saying.
