Joe Faranda, back from his Washington adventure

Actually, Joe got back Friday night. He flew into Westchester County airport from Dulles, in a 25 seat commuter prop plane (United), along with one of his classmates, F.J. Ellis.

And he was not impressed with the flight. It was windy, the plane was buffeted all over the sky, and half the people on board got queasy stomachs. He says he doesn’t want to take any more flights on small airplanes!

As I mentioned in an earlier posting, Joe was in DC from Sunday to Friday, at a program put on by the “Junior Congressional Youth Leadership Council”. He was quite animated when he got home and seems to have had a good experience. He heard talks, went to museums, congressional offices, visited Harpers Ferry (John Brown). His group had 230 Jr. H.S. students from around the country.

Of course all was not perfect. Joe wasn’t wild about getting up at 6 AM, and not impressed with the breakfasts. “They had this weird thin pancake every morning with strange fillings stuffed in it.” Sounds like crepes are not his thing.

He took a few photos in DC – not as many as I would have expected – and it’s funny to see what impresses 12 year olds (or at least this twelve year old).

Here, for example, is a picture of Abe lincoln’s hat!

And a piece of the Berlin wall.

And here’s part of the relatively new Korean War Memorial, which I haven’t seen yet. I reminded Joe that his grandfather – my father – was in Korea for a year. After having spent two years in the Pacific during WW II his National Guard Unit was recalled and sent to Korea in 1951. My father actually didn’t see me until I was eleven months old.

Here’s Joe after his return Friday night, doing one of his favorite things – Playstation! Home Sweet Home I guess.

  1. Thanks for sharing the great pics from Joe’s DC trip! Glad he is home safe and sound, too. Made me think that it’s about time to take my FIRST trip to “the other Washington”. So much to see and take in!
